In our rapid lifestyle and the constant need to pay your tuition fees and to make extra money for your school supplements and software subscriptions. Architecture students find themselves in need to find a part-time job during architecture school time.  It is one of the common questions I get asked, about whether an architecture student can work before graduation or not. In this short article, I discuss the matter where if whether you can balance between getting a part-time job or not during your enrollment in architecture school.

Whether you have been admitted to a private or a governmental university, a student must pay a certain amount each year or semester, depending on the school system. Several factors may affect the amount you pay from the university you attend, the place where you live, or the courses you enrolled in, architecture school is not inexpensive to enroll in and we will discuss why.

Even though a student’s financial situation might vary, when you enroll in a such field you must remember that you must be prepared and equipped with several tools to surpass each semester. Drafting tools, stationery, laptop, software, and subscriptions are among the things each architecture student must consider. I personally was able to afford these things in my first year in architecture school, but as you progress, more financial commitments were accumulated each semester. The hardest things were my personal laptop with good specifications and printing out my drawings. Not every student can cover that when he or she have no idea what you are getting into.

You need to remember something, we are not only discussing the time you consume to get paid but mentally as well. With the amount of pressure your professor applies on you, you need to figure out how to be mentally prepared for the constant pressure from your school and your work requirements. So, if you really love this field and you want to excel in it, be prepared for what’s coming ahead.

Now let’s discuss the kind of job you are looking for. Firstly, you are illegible to work in any architecture firm because you did not get your certificate. You may work as an intern, or you find another job that does not require a certificate. I have seen a student with skills in software, drafting, drawing, sketching, or even maquette making can be an opportunity to cover some of the expenses you need for your school. You also may find a job in a café, restaurant, office, etc. Any opportunity to find a source of income can find which does not interfere with your way to success in your school of architecture.

Something to put in mind is that working as an intern student may not provide you with the salary you are looking for, but the experience you get is much greater. After all, you are looking for a much better opportunity in the future so do not be overwhelmed but your first payment of the attitude you get from your boss at first, it gets easier as your get more experienced. Moreover, try to make as many connections as you can whether you are involved in an architecture or non-architecture job. The connection will help you in the future to be well known and open new doors for your career.

Other tips for you that keep building your character, resume, and your personal growth as you are involved in different duties. These skills will not only help you with your professor at your school, but they are the most wanted skill in your career as a future architect. Socialize with people, and open new channels for yourself. Use social media to build your portfolio and to get more followers. Maybe at the time as was an intern I did not have such an opportunity, but later on I started my own pages on different platforms to be well known in the community.

To conclude that, opportunities in life vary for those who are seeking for them, be prepared for a rough road that will only improve you as a person and as a future glamorous architect. Being a good architect is not only about your grades in architecture schools, it’s also about your communications skills and your previous experience. Does not matter what job you get at first or what is the first cheque you receive, always aim high and climb the stairs to your dream. The balance between your work and your study because you will need the mentality to handle the pressure as every future architect should.
